Post a Caption!

Hadley and Leila make us laugh all the time! Help us by posting a caption for one or both of these photos. We look forward to being entertained by your responses!

There's No Place Like Home

We made it! As Tony let you know in his one sentence post, the girls, Tony, and I are finally a family. We "roomed in" at the hospital for one night with the girls to make sure they would do okay, then headed home early yesterday afternoon. They're both attached to oxygen tanks indefinitely, but it's a tiny amount, and shouldn't be too long before they get off (hopefully).

It's been an adjustment being at home, to say the least ... how many of you have tried holding two babies, while cleaning up two simultaneous spit-ups, while holding two bottles, while working around two twenty foot lengths of oxygen tubing? Thank goodness for Tony! And it's just day one! :)

Baby Steps

Well, the beginning of the week has come and gone, and the girls aren't home from the hospital like I had hoped. The good news is that both of them are completely off all tubes, except oxygen, which they will probably come home on, and a feeding tube, which we only use when they get too tired to finish their own feedings. Hadley gets to nurse three times a day, and Leila gets to nurse two times a day. (Which means ... guess how my days are spent?) :) All we're waiting for is for them to start finishing every bottle feeding without using the feeding tube, and to start gaining weight consistently. The hard part is that there is no estimate on how long it might take for them to gain enough strength to do both of those things! The girls themselves control the situation, in a way.

As we're getting ready for them to come home, my mom came over the other day and painted a whimsical tree branch on the wall of the nursery. Cute, huh? My mom is so talented!

And since I know you like to see pictures of the girls, here are a couple. The first one is Hadley after her first bath. Daddy did her hair! :)

Leila hasn't gotten her first bath yet, because she was having some tummy trouble this weekend. Here she is with her eyes open, cudding with daddy.

Wombmates to Roommates

Today the girls got to move in together! They're in a double crib where they can snuggle with each other as much as they want. Having them together means that I got to hold both of them at the same time for the first time! Daddy hasn't gotten his chance yet, but we're heading up to the hospital soon to see them.

Some of you knew that I have been staying at the hospital under "hotel status" to be close to the girls. Today we decided that it was time for me to come home. I'll go to the hospital a few times a day, but I was feeling the need to get life started up again. Pray for Tony and I, as we're both getting tired, and getting anxious to get the girls home.

Lastly, we need your opinion! Based on the photos that you've seen, who do you think the girls look like? We can't see a lot of traits from either one of us or our relatives yet. Let us know what you think!

One Week Old!

Can you believe it has already been a week since the girls were born? I don't have any pictures to post tonight, but I know lots of you are checking for health updates. Today was a big day for both Hadley & Leila! Hadley started nursing and her IV was taken out (so her only nutrition is coming from food). Leila had to go back under the bili light temporarily, but she got to start eating from a bottle and she's no longer on oxygen. We're trying not to get our hopes up, but it looks like Hadley may come home as early as the beginning of next week, and Leila shouldn't be far behind.

We'll post more pictures as we can, since I know there are lots of proud relatives and friends who can't wait to see the next photos. We love you all!

A VanHorn Who's Who

Yesterday Leila got rid of the CPAP mask and was able to show us how pretty she is! So, here are both sisters. You can tell them apart, right? :-)

(The top one is Leila and the bottom one is Hadley, by the way.)
Here's a video of Leila, a little less plugged in. Soooo sweet!

Her Name is Leila

We keep getting surprised by milestones when we go in to visit the girls! Last night we went to feed Hadley at 9:00 pm, and the nurse decided that it was okay for us to hold Leila for the first time! She had to keep her mask on, but we were able to see some more facial features than before, and of course, cuddling with her was just the best thing we could have asked for.

She has a piggy nose because of the mask. :) She was holding my finger really tightly and holding it to her cheek ... it was the sweetest thing I think I've ever experienced.

And, as I'm sure you can tell based on Daddy's post, he couldn't get enough of his younger baby girl. He told me that he falls asleep smiling every night now, thinking of his gals. It's almost more fun to watch him hold them, than it is to hold them myself ... almost!

Two Day Photos

Things are still looking good in the NICU -- the girls are both under bilirubin lights for jaundice, and there are still lots of tubes, but they're doing great! Here's a picture of Leila under the "billy" lights, with her little crack showing out of the top of her diaper. :)

The rest of these are of Hadley. She got her first feeding last night, and she gulped all 5 mL within minutes. We also got a good picture of her with her eyes open, and look at her tiny little toes!
Today, we hope to remove Leila's oxygen, and maybe even start feeding her as well. There's also a chance that Hadley can have her IV's taken out. Every day means lots of progress! Thanks to my sister Becky for being such a great photographer while Mommy and Daddy are preoccupied with holding and feeding!

Daddy's Thoughts

I can't believe it! I, Tony L. VanHorn, am a father! I have to give all the props in the world to my beautiful wife ... we'll call her Wonder Woman from now on. :-) I think it's safe to say that she has earned several consecutive evenings out to dinner for all the hard work she did! Both girls are gorgeous and doing just fine, going through standard NICU procedures. Here are a few pictures of Daddy with his girls: 1st is me in scrubs pre-delivery with no concept of what we are about to get into, 2nd is me holding Hadley, and the 3rd is me holding hands with Leila. This is the best new job title I've ever had!

Welcome to the World!

After 33 weeks and 6 days of being inside, the twincesses decided to make their appearance yesterday! My water broke at 8:00 am, and from there, there was no turning back.

Hadley Luella was born naturally at 7:04 pm on June 4th, weighing 5 lbs 7 oz. We got a really good picture of her right after she was born, but they took her right to the NICU, so we didn't get to see her for long.

Leila Elaine followed big sister at 7:34 pm weighing 5 lbs 1 oz. Up until right before she was born, we thought we would be able to deliver naturally as well, but Leila's heart rate started dropping drastically, and the decision was made to deliver her by c-section. Her heart rate was clear down to 50 bpm in the few minutes that it took to do the emergency procedure. Because she was in such rough shape, we didn't get to see her right away, and this is the best picture we've been able to get so far. However, the reports are good, and all of her existing health conditions should go away as she gets a little bigger.

After only being able to look at the girls all day today, we were finally able to hold Hadley this afternoon. Here's proud Daddy with his baby girl!

At this moment, we're being told to expect the girls to stay in NICU for up to two weeks each. Of course, we'll get more pictures of Leila up as soon as she's taken off oxygen and we can hold her for a little while. And Daddy wants to make his own post in the next couple of days, so you can look forward to that!

MiniVan Update

Well, it turns out that my appointments got mis-scheduled at the doctor, so my appointment yesterday wasn't quite as informative as I expected. I had hoped to get a new estimate on how much the girls weigh, but somehow that part didn't get put on the doctor's calendar. What was actually scheduled was a biophysical profile, which he's doing in replacement of the non-stress test that wasn't very successful last time. It looks at organ function and baby movement through ultrasound doppler. Everything looks great -- in fact, the babies were moving so much that the ultrasound tech was having trouble locking in on some of the measurements she needed. :) We did get a couple of pictures, too! Here's one of B's hand touching A's face. It's just amazing that they're already getting to know each other in there.
At another appointment today, with my ObGyn, I found out that I can be on very lenient bed rest starting on Friday. She wants me to rest whenever possible, but I can go grocery shopping, or cook a meal, or fold some laundry ... wait, what's the benefit of not being on bed rest again? :) After Friday, I can go into labor whenever the babies decide to get here. But if I go into labor before Friday, they'll try to stop my contractions with some medicines that have pretty terrible side effects. So ... pray them "in" until Friday, and then, for my sake, start praying them "out"!

33 Weeks

Here's a new twist on the belly shot! I guess I get a little rambunctious when my doctor lets me out of the house. And if it looks like I'm trying to hold my belly up ... well, that wasn't intentional, but it definitely feels like it could fall of at any moment since it's so heavy. :)

I have a big doctor's appointment today, so if you'll allow me to post two days in a row, I'll post again tomorrow with an update on that.
